Cassie
Colour: DSH black tabby and white
Born: April 15, 2023
Gender: Spayed female (microchipped)
History:
Cassie and her two kittens, Mordecai and Katia, were living rough in a hamlet in southern Alberta. They were brought to our attention in mid December 2024 when the kittens were five months old. The person who provided food and shelter was eventually able to capture them all, several days apart. The kittens were shy, they had never been handled; however, Cassie, has made remarkable progress which suggests a previous home, probably when just a youngster herself. Her frozen ears would have been very painful. One ear was almost entirely frozen off, the other has damage.
Personality:
Cassie may have been someone’s cat at one time but was again unsocialized by the time she came to PAW with her two kittens. This process was clearly being reversed by her foster-guardians’ patience and constant efforts, but what really seemed to bring Cassie around was the departure of her kittens on a trial-adoption (they were subsequently adopted).
Cassie probably never had much of a kittenhood. As a mum, she had been a first-class protector, provider and soother, of which her kittens took full advantage. Off on their own adventures, their mother now has plenty of “me-time”, as her foster-guardian put it, and isn’t wasting a moment!
Thanks to other cats in the foster-home, Cassie has learned to play, and now enjoys wrestling and play-boxing, often followed by a mutual grooming session and cuddles. She has made quite a few friends in the household’s feline population, too.
Her attitude toward humans changed; coming from a tough life, she may have worried about how people would act around her kittens. Once her kittens were no longer a concern to her, and with only herself to think about, Cassie learned that people can be friends and playmates. She initiates interaction, which is quite a switch from her past, guarded behaviour. She is curious, active and cheerful, with a sweet personality. She is very attentive to her hygiene and keeps herself well-groomed.
Formerly, it was thought that Cassie would have done better as an only-cat. Now that we see her true personality – one of the advantages of fostering – we know that she would benefit immensely from having another cat in any adoptive home. This girlcat loves company!
